With numerous additions to the distribution center over the years and a new addition under construction, this footwear distributor questioned if the existing layout should be replicated in the new addition. As many companies do, the size, shape, height, column spacing, and docks for the new space was literally cast in concrete before determining the best operational layout for the business. Distribution Design used its proprietary “fast track” methodologies for analyses and an operational design. The improvements over the existing operation allow improved access to all of the 36,000 SKUs, higher productivity, a hot-pick concept that improves promotional processing when daily volume quintuples, and re-use of almost all existing storage equipment.
